Wednesday was the Spring Special Olympics. It was so much fun! I got to school at around 8:30 and we all hung out in Yoosh's room untill about 9:30 when we left. All the members, and alot of friends, of the EC Buddies Club showed up to help and support. In the end we ended up having a EC Buddy for each student. We rode the bus up to UNCW track and unloaded and headed out for our spot. We pushed through the crowds and crowds of groups untill we finally made it to our lot area. We set up our tent, blankets, coolers, and everything else. Once all that was put right we headed out for our events.
All the kids got little stickers on their backs saying their name, school, and events. The events were softball throwing, jumping, running, and walking. First we did running. For each seperate running even there would be four or five kids from all the different schools and groups. One of our students were usually in each group. I know that the ones that got first place for the running events were Sorry and Bebe, but there might have been others. All the runners were the more high developed ones that could run good, but that wasnt that case every time. Some of Mama's friends ran, and she could hardly walk regularly without a walker. All the kids were so cute, the guy would start counting them off and about everyone went at different times too early. But once one went, they all went. And the workers couldnt stop them once they got going.
When they were done running they did walking. I cant really remember all the specific people who were doing which event, but they all did great. Most of the time I was busy chasing someone down and making sure that all the kids stayed together and cheered for their classmates. Whenever someone would cheer for the student doing the event, you could see that student look over and smile and really get pumped up. Our lowest developed student, Hair, was assigned to do walking. He had to have someone go with him, and I was up. I had kind of partnered with him during the day already because he likes to wander off and no one else really likes to deal with him, but I do. He drools alot too, but he's still really sweet and cute. So I got on the track with him and stood behind him. I put my hands on his sholders to make him go, and go in the right direction, and when he yelled go.. we were off. You couldnt run, but you were supposed to speed walk. The entire time I had my hands on his sholders he was trying to brush them off with his hands. I was yelling "Go Hair Go!!", and he was busy trying to get me off and away from him. Obviously, I was more into it than he was. Needless to say that we probably came in last place, but it was still fun.
When we finished that we went to the softball throw. I remember that Bird, Mama, Bebe, and Sorry did it; but I cant remember if anyone else did. Mama was so cute! She would hold the ball, look at us and smile, throw it, and then look back at us and laugh and scream. She didnt throw it very well (mostly because her arms are the size of toothpicks), but you could tell that she was enjoying herself so much.
During the throwing even my buddy Hair, decides that he wants to take a little stroll (more like a sprint) away from the group. I look over and see Kate trying to hold onto him long enough to herd him back to the group, but she is very unsuccessfull. Hair probably weighs a good three hundred some pounds and one teenage girl wont be able to control him. And as you will know soon, not even two can. When I see her I run towards them and I grab him around his back and stomach and try to turn him around. Kate has his front and I have his back, and we are making no dent at all. So finally we just let go and set him free to escape. He runs through the track, through the crowds, and towards our tent. He goes near it and I saw "Hair, just sit down under the tent". He goes and sits down and me and Kate collapse in the shade. We all pretty much just drank water, and took a little time out.
After about twenty minutes the group comes over and we all sit down. They brought us our lunches (Chick-Fil-A sandwiches) and we all just chill and eat. It was Glasses's birthday so his mom brought cupcakes for the class and we all ate the cupcakes and sang to him. After that we took about one hundred pictures of our group and then headed out. When we got back to the classroom everyone was exhausted so we all just sat around and played Uno.
All in all, it was a really great and awesome day!
