Thursday, April 28, 2011 (Week One)

I went to the art class at the elementary school today, we made Mothers Day pottery. The kindergarten class made butterflies, the first graders made flowers, the second grades made little vase type things, and the third, fourth, and fifth graders made spoon rests. When I go into the art room I am always there for third and fourth and go to lunch in between the two during fifth grade.
I came in and the third grade class was already in there. I have one little favorite boy in that class called Attitude. He is so silly, and just really fun to sit with during that class. Art Lady let me make a spoon rest for my mom so I went over to the table where they were painting their pottery. There were two tables doing the pottery and then all the other ones were decorating bags to put them in and Art Lady would just call groups of four to come over and paint.
Well they were already sitting there so I pulled up a chair at the table with Attitude at it and sat down and started to paint. They all said that mine was really cool looking (which it is), and I told them all of theirs were really cute too (which they were). I don't think a little kid can ever paint or do anything artsy that doesn't look cute. The paint was really weird looking because all of the colors were really dull and light, but I guess when they get cooked the colors become prettier. It was really funny, I went over to the table with Art Lady and she was telling me what all the colors were going to look like after they were cooked. There was this really ugly tannish brown and I was like "Is that brown...?" she laughed but told me that the ugly brown color was going to turn into a really pretty blue. I did half of my spoon yellow and the other half blue with a green stripe in the middle. Most of the kids just kind of either painted the whole thing one color or just painted big blobs of colors randomly. You have to paint three coats so it will show up good and pretty much all of the kids just wanted to paint longer so they all painted like ten coats.
When I was done painting it was almost time for me to leave and the third graders had just left. I cleaned out the paint water buckets and the brushes and then set them all out. The fifth grade class came in and they sat down on the carpet, and by the time I was leaving Art Lady was passing out their pottery.
When I came back from lunch the fourth grade class had been there for about five minutes. There is one table on Thursdays that is always the most fun to sit with. I pulled up a chair and we all decorated bags together. There's one little "tough guy" boy at that table, who of course would NEVER want to draw hearts and flowers on a bag.. even if it was for his mommy. But, I made him make it look pretty for his mommy so he draw some really ugly hearts and a few funky looking flowers. It was really cute in the end, all of them were. The juicy news of today was that one of the girls at that table "went out" with tough boy, and that was just crazy. They went out before Spring Break for like a few days, but she says that she doesn't like him anymore. BUT he still likes her (sad) and he wrote her this love letter apparently, which was really adorable.. but she didn't think so. It was really funny because me and the girls were talking about this while he was painting his and then the one girl went to paint and he was coming back. As he was coming back, the other girl leaned over and whispered (very dramatically) "DON'T say ANYTHING, he's coming back!!" And I was like "Oh, okay!!" It was really funny. But we are getting the pottery back next week when its all done, and I am really excited. I kind of feel like I'm in fourth grade too, which is not that bad (when it comes to art).
