"Lowa" is a intern in the EC class from the university that is a senior and is getting her in class experience in Yoosh's class. She's so nice and she is really great with the kids. This post is just going to be about some of the things I noticed and even my teacher cadet teacher noticed when she taught a little lesson earlier this week.
Well everyday since the beginning of the semester Lowa teaches a little mini lesson to the kids right after lunch. Its usually a article pertaining to everyday stuff and then some reading comprehension afterwards. Today's lesson was all about bad behavior, what happens when change your bad behavior to good behavior, and how you can do that. You don't get in trouble, you make more friends, you seem like a nicer person, etc. Well one of the good things that I noticed is that she always calls on the students and gets them involved, which helps keep them focus. She calls on kids to read paragraphs, read the questions, answer the questions, or just to demonstrate something. She always makes sure that they raise their hand and don't speak until she has called on them, which is also a very important task that they need to do. Lowa will let the kids read it, then she will read it, and then she will talk about it to make sure that they understand. This is really good because with a lot of the kids they need multiple times being told something before they actually register it into their brains. A good thing that my teacher cadet teacher and I noticed is that when Lowa asked to give examples of bad behavior Sorry raised his hand and said "A bad behavior is when Babay talks about inappropriate things" Lowa calmly stopped him and said "Sorry, we are not saying particular people and I think its best if we encourage good behavior instead of pointing out bad behavior". Another time Babay said "Miss Lowa, your pretty" (this comes out of his and Sorry's mouths so many times and to so many people, its not even funny), Lowa said "That has nothing to do with what we are doing right now, so lets try to stay focused." I would have never thought to do that. Whenever they say that to me I always say "Your pretty too" or "Your funny to" so I don't show them that when they say that, it makes me like them or it makes me happy or anything (Love and Logic, I think..). When she said that I almost pulled out a pen and paper and wrote that down for future purposes. Some other things Lowa does is she always tries to spend one on one time with each of the students, so that she can build relationships with all of them. I automatically flock to the really cute ones, or the really outgoing ones, like Mama and Babay.. but Lowa flocks to them all and I really admire that.
Overall I should definitely be taking note of all the great things that she's doing with the kids because pretty much everything she does is right on target of what we should do!
I wonder if she learned all that at the University? That response she gave to Brandon's comment is something I'll have to use in the near future. Thanks for sharing.

She probably did, your welcome!
ReplyDeleteI really like how she responded, "Sorry, we are not saying particular people and I think its best if we encourage good behavior instead of pointing out bad behavior." That's really cool! She didn't get angry, or just simply say don't mention names. I like how the lesson was interactive and how it used examples!
ReplyDeleteI think that the best part of the sentence, "Sorry, we are not saying particular people and I think its best if we encourage good behavior instead of pointing out bad behavior," is that she used the words WE and I. My mentor teacher does similar sayings. One of my favorites is, "I'm looking for...(clean tables, a straight line, etc.)."
