"Chaos" Is A Everyday Term In Fourth Grade Art-- Blog 2

As I walk in Art Lady's art class I can already hear the "I need help!"'s and the "don't touch my glue!"'s. As I rush to assist these seemingly helpless fourth graders, I get a feeling of chaos. In elementary schools two hour delays can either make the kids exhausted or hyped up beyond imagination. Today, the effect was the latter of the two. While the kids were weaving their looms, I walked around just listening to what they were saying. I was stunned by the hostility level that these innocent children were reaching. The two hour delay had taken over their brains and made them into these hyper, mean, little kids. They weren't rude to me or Art Lady's, but they definitely were to each other.
During the fifth grade class there is this one little adorable red headed boy who ALWAYS talks. He kept talking and talking and talking, until they had silent art. Even after silent art he kept talking, so Art Lady moved him to the "angel table". That's the little table at the front of the room that has all the supplies on it decorated with angels. It doubled as a behavioral correction facility today. This little boy was sitting alone at this table and I was sitting near him watching the kids, and him, work. I could hear someone near me mumbling stuff so I look over and the little redhead was talking, even though he was sitting... alone. I looked at him and said "Who are you talking to?" and he giggled a little and said "I don't know, myself I guess". It was hilarious that he got moved because he was talking and even though he was alone, he still talked. Little kids amuse me all the time.
Whenever I'm in the elementary classes, they alllllllllllllways ask me if i know their brother or their neighbor or their cousin or their whatever they can think of. Well this one little girl asked me if I knew her neighbor, Blah Blah. When I said "Uh, I think I might.", she said "Well, she might go to high school. She either went to McDonald's, or the military.." I couldn't help myself. It was an insta-bust. I felt bad laughing at what she said, but I honestly couldn't help myself. I mean, how do you get McDonald's and the military mixed up...? It pretty much made my day.

  1. Trust me...fourth graders.......not what they seem! I'm glad you were Mrs.Cox pot of gold ending the rainbow! I remember one day I was in there with her and they do some pretty tough activities!

  2. Weaving is difficult task. I was really surprised at how good they are at it, as well as the other stuff they do too. When I did weaving in 7th grade, it took me about 2 weeks to finish. Sounds like you had alot of fun!

  3. I will be making an "Angel table" now.
That is such a great idea.
I love that you are really connecting with these kids, its awesome.
What do you see yourself teaching art or E.C.?

  4. That made me laugh too! It's too funny she got them mixed up! Elementary kids do that I guess, they don't recognize the extreme difference! Art is always fun, I love crafts and hands-on things! Weaving sounds really hard, they must have picked up on it quickly. When I was working with a kindergarten class this one girl in particular would ask me all the time, do you know my brother? Do you know so and so? The list keeps on going! I don't think they recognize that there are a lot more people in high school than elementary. That's what I love about elementary school though, it's small enough that everyone knows everyone, or has at least seen or talked to them before.

  5. The redheaded boy seems cute but I can't help but wonder if he has some kind of disorder? If he can't even stop talking when he's alone or maybe he was just lonely. Either way, sounds funny.
Also, I really do love the "angel table" thing.

  6. Hahah yeah, I could see a little 7th grade brien lancaster having trouble with weaving. It is pretty hard to do, but they have been working on those looms for a really long time! When I was in that elementary class they asked me about like everyone they knew the first few days I was in there. I could honestly see myself doing either. I love the variety that comes with both areas. With both classes you can do any age and any level of skill. Although, I dont think I'm that good at art so I might have to stick with EC as a profession, ahaha.
